Layer Chair

Jorrit Taekema is a Dutch product developer currently based in New York. He works on small houseware products whose details expose a heightened attention to human nature.

His 2010 graduation project was the Layer Chair, which was inspired by sediment, exposure, and history as seen in bedrock strata, forest floors and untouched earth. The chair is made of a composite consisting of coconut fibres and latex. Coconut fibre is a by-product of the coconut industry and is almost never processed into useful products. When latex is combined with coconut fibre, the result is a strong, flexible and resilient material that is surprisingly ideal for comfortable furniture. It has the added bonus of being 100% biodegradable.
