Niels Datema
GraphLight
Niels Datema is a product designer whose work provides minimalism and simplicity in high-end materials to chefs and restaurants. His kitchen and homeware comes from a space of research.
In order to explore the different applications of graphite, Datema designed various products, each of which displays a different property thereof. Datema discovered that graphite has huge potential in terms of sustainable homeware. It is an excellent electrical conductor and has a very low friction, making it the only naturally-occurring dry lubricant. Furthermore, the material is exceptionally resistant to extreme temperatures and corrosion. The GraphLight consists of a positive and a negative pole. When these two parts make contact, i.e., the two halves of the lamp are connected, the LED light turns on – no switch needed. The lubricating effect of graphite is used to focus the lamp on a fixed point without any effort.
