Borre Akkersdijk
BB. Platform
Borre Akkersdijk is the founder and leader of the Amsterdam-based textile design and production company BYBORRE. BYBORRE uses circular knitting machines (an idea borrowed from the mattress industry), technologically innovative patterns, and novel materials to create textiles that are produced in the exact amounts a customer brand needs.
BB. Platform focuses on wearable technology and smart textiles. For the platform, Akkersdijk developed a new way of 3D knitting, integrating copper wiring and sensor threads. Various types of sensors, such as GPS, Wi-Fi and heat control, were woven into the fabrics. BYBORRE developed a pillow with vibration sensors for Alzheimer’s patients as well as the BB. Suit, a prototype of smart clothing introduced at the SXSW festival in Austin in 2014. In order to make the use of smart textiles more sustainable, Akkersdijk looked into the possibilities of sand wiring instead of copper wire.
