Phygital Virtuosity

Bastiaan de Nennie merges the digital and physical worlds in his Phygital Studio (physical+digital), which is based in Rotterdam.

By looking at what already exists, Phygital Virtuosity, de Nennie’s graduation project for Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015, gives life to new ideas and blended materials. In de Nennie’s works, objects such as flatirons, toys, flowers, etc from the pre-digital age are scanned; once recreated digitally, the scans are dissected and the components are used as building blocks for new, nearly abstract digital figurines which are then 3D printed, bringing the cycle back into the physical realm. De Nennie claims that this cycle questions the human belief that ‘the atomic structure is more real than its virtual counterpart’. It is a cosmic finger pointing out our insecurities about the material holding more value than the virtual.
