Virtual Paper

Rudolf Romero Borgart is a spatial designer specialising in virtual reality (VR). He is the CEO of 01X (founded 2019), a consultancy firm and software development platform that focuses on speculative and extended reality products.

The world of materials is bigger than the material world. Using algorithms, computers can simulate the natural characteristics of materials. For his project Virtual Paper, Borgart used an algorithm developed by the University of California at Berkeley to simulate the characteristics of paper. By linking that algorithm to VR glasses and special software, virtual paper can be manipulated with virtual hands in a virtual environment and then even printed in 3D – a digital-to-physical transformation.
