Sheaves

Steven Banken is a furniture and lighting designer based in Eindhoven. His work embraces traditional crafts by performing minimal interventions on natural and hand-gathered materials.

Banken’s line of outdoor benches, called Sheaves, is an homage to old agricultural and forestry practices in the Biesbosch forest. In the winter, straw and willow branches are cut, bundled into sheaves and bound with steel bands. The bench will serve its purpose all summer for visitors to the forest, and in the autumn it will disintegrate, leaving only the steel bands to be recovered and reused.
