Pauline van Dongen
Morphogenesis
Pauline van Dongen is a fashion designer specialized in wearable technology. She integrates circuitry and solar fabrics into clothing items that can respond to the weather, charge a smartphone, or indicate via haptic feedback that the wearer should adjust their posture or breathing pattern. Van Dongen was the first Dutch fashion designer to receive a PhD degree.
In 2010, van Dongen designed the Morphogenesis shoe, which she claims to be the first fully-3D printed shoe in the world. The product itself is a computer file, which users can download, alter, and print anywhere in the world. The method of production has several key advantages: items no longer need to be kept in stock and there are no environmental or transportation and shipping costs. Made from polyamide 12 and hollow, it is fully recyclable and uses few material resources. Van Dongen designed Morphogenesis in partnership with Freedom of Creation.
