Amsterdam Maker Festival

Elmo Vermijs is an Amsterdam-based designer who works within the confluence of art, design, architecture and landscape. His work investigates the relationships between the uses and production of (waste) materials. Dirk Overduin is a freelance designer who specializes in the integration of design and building.

In 2011, Vermijs and Overduin collaborated on the concept and spatial design for the stands at the Amsterdam Maker Festival, which promotes the role of craftsmanship and production in today’s society. In designing the layout for the festival, the designers paid heed to the waste materials that could be sourced around Amsterdam Noord as a way of minimising transport costs (also known as the ‘harvest cart method’). The presentation tables were made using sheets of discarded underlayment panels held together by strips of jute cocoa sacks.
